Provision of Official Veterinary Services to Ports
Border Inspection Posts (BIPs) are operated by local authorities who are responsible for the official controls of products for animal origin coming into the European Union from third countries via seaports and airports. Southampton City Council is responsible for the operation of the Southampton Border Inspection Post and employs the official veterinary surgeons (OVS’s) and official fish inspectors (OFI’s) who carry out all official controls as described by European Council Directive 97/78/EC and relevant legislation, decisions and guidance implemented into domestic regulations or directly applicable in the UK, together with all other relevant legislation whether introduced before or after the commencement date.. Their role is to check that imports, transhipments and transits of all products of animal origin (POAO) are accompanied by the appropriate documentation and conform to regulations.
